The morning sun filters through the trees as we walk down the gravel path towards the combat hall, the scent of pine, magic, and testosterone thick in the air.

Three days since Silas sat down at our table and stunned the hell out of me. Three days of him being… decent. Painfully polite. Almost gentle. Like he was trying to atone for sins he hadn’t even spoken out loud yet. And I hate how much that gets under my skin.

The dragon backpack still sits proudly at the end of my bed, its wings slightly lopsided and eyes a little too big for its head. It’s ridiculous. It’s perfect. And yeah, I may have squealed when I opened it. But I also didn’t forget. I won’t forget. Silas might be charming me now, but my walls are up for a reason, built brick by bloody brick after years of betrayals and manipulation. I’m not about to be some pretty little puppet again. No one pulls my strings anymore. Not without bleeding for it.

Still… that smile he gave me when I hugged the backpack to my chest, with his eyes going all glassy?

Kael bumps his arm against mine as we near the training mats, his voice low and sinful in my ear. “Can’t wait to see you all hot and sweaty again, princess.”

I roll my eyes and elbow him in the ribs—not hard, but just enough to hear him grunt. “You’ve gotta earn that privilege, Kael. I’m not that easy.”

He gives me a look that says he’d absolutely enjoy the challenge. “Offer you a vein and something shiny, and you’ll be on your knees in gratitude, yeah?” He jokes.

I waggle my brows at him. “You bring me a blood bag and a stuffed mythical teddy, and I might even purr.”

Kael groans, dragging a hand over his face like he’s trying to hold onto his last shred of sanity. “Fuck. You’re going to be the death of me.”

“Promise?” I wink, then glance ahead as the rest of the group pushes open the heavy oak doors to the combat hall.

Riven’s already at the front, stretching out those thick arms of his, eyes scanning the room like he’s assessing it for threats. Always the alpha, always alert. A few girls near the entrance are whispering behind their hands, not even trying to be subtle as they eye the guys walking beside me like they’re the gods of some unholy pantheon.

Which… fair.

Kael is trouble incarnate in a pretty face. Riven’s that brooding protector you don’t realise is lethal until your throat is already ripped out. Silas has been quiet this morning, walking a step behind like a shadow, his storm-grey eyes unreadable. Almost like he is trying to prove himself as my protector. Hmm, we’ll see.
